STOP. HARASSING. PEOPLE.

I'm SICK of seeing so many good people (some of them are basically kids) around SCARED because hordes of people harass them over fictional characters. I've been silent all this time but I'm sick of seeing so many nice people suffering.

Harassing a person can have serious consequences, affecting psychologically to the point of leading them to harm themselves.

You are not soldiers of justice. Protecting non-existent characters by harming living beings, and then celebrating the damage you've caused, is not justice. Something that doesn't exist has more value than a person for you?

Then you are not heroes. You are villains.

By the way, Undertale has a very nice message about tolerance and diversity, you should learn about it.

Have a nice day.

The most insane thing is that someone really needs it to be explained to them???

This especially irritates me when people say it about kids.

I've learned in the past 4 years that many adults don't actually teach their kids shit about being a human being. What adults see as "common knowledge" they just expect their kids to know, then punish the kid when they don't.

It leads to a lot of mental and emotional distress for child and parent, and by extension teachers or any other adult responsible for the child.

Kids need a lot of attention to develop and grow and be the best they can be, and I don't understand why that's such a hard concept. You want your kid to verbally tell you what's wrong, you have to give him the language tools to express themselves.

You want your kid to clean up after themselves, teach them how to fold clothes, where to put them, how to sort clean from dirty.

Kids don't know how to do these things inherently.

[Image description: Twitter thread by Sophie Gonzales:

The biggest change of viewpoint I ever went through during psych training was when I said “but what if they’re doing it for attention?” and my supervisor was like “what’s wrong with needing attention?” And I realised I didn’t have an answer.

Crying for help is not something people do if they don’t need help. If you’re “seeking attention” it’s because you’re lonely, or scared or not okay. You need support and human connection. So why is society’s response to that scenario to withhold it!!?

It’s like society is so paranoid about the “boy who cried wolf” we want to withhold support to anyone who might be anything other than “on the verge of an urgent emergency.” But the way to effectively STOP someone from an emergency situation is early intervention!

And the sign that some early intervention is needed is usually, you guessed it, when people start trying to gain support and care from loved ones / the people in their lives.

It’s not only valid to ask for help when the distress is a 10/10 emergency.

stuff I like

- when the person kidnapped by the villain is all ‘no one’s going to come for me’ and

- someone does, but it’s the person they’d least expect

- EVERYONE COMES because wow, maybe I am depressed because I didn’t think I knew this many people, much less that they liked me

- no one comes and the villain gets pissed on their captive’s behalf and treats them better than their former associates did

- they rescue themselves and everyone’s so impressed but the person yells because I AM CAPABLE AND YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST NOTICED I’D BEEN KIDNAPPED

- they get rescued by a deus ex machina, preferably their dad/mom/grandma/old associate who is exponentially cooler than the heroes

basically, I like it when people get rescued and get validation

poroquagganbob

Can I add: people getting rescued by their pets.

corinnetags

I also really love when a person gets kidnapped and is utterly unsfraid because they know that a specific person is coming for them and oh boy did that villain make a mistake kidnapping them.

If there was a way to run SUPER MEGA AD BLOCKER on this website I fucking would

Freeloader Comin’ through!

gizensha

We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).

And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.

bramblepatch

Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.

pocosun

Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker.

Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:

image

Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature

image

Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu

image

And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”

image

And then just refreshed the page

also if you’re using firefox (please use firefox) you can download the plugin “NoScript” and turn things off/on per script the website is running. that way the site of the website can usually still work and you can make facebook, google and amazon stop following your every move

Yet Another Tumblr Guide for New Users

  1. Change your avatar, header, and put something on your description right now. Do not interact with any post before you do this. Otherwise, you’ll just be mistaken for a bot and blocked.
  2. Post/Reblog stuff before following people. Even with your blog all customized, some people will still block you if they see your blog is empty.
  3. Reblog, reblog, and reblog! Reblogs are not like quote retweets. Reblogging stuff is how Tumblr works, and reblogs actually help OP gain traction.
  4. “Likes are useless” —You’ve probably seen a lot of guides preaching this, but actually that’s only some people’s opinions. People prefer reblogs over likes because it helps OP get more views/interaction on their posts, while likes are just—well, “likes.” It tells OP that you liked their post. Nothing bad with that. Some people also use likes to bookmark posts they want to find later. But if you want to support an artist, consider reblogging their work as well if you are able. If you don’t have enough spoons to use for reblogging, then that’s okay too.
  5. Tags are for categorization, not clout. If you post about one thing but then tag it with irrelevant tags (especially those that happened to be trending), then people can report your post as spam. Here's a Guide to Tagging (edit coz I forgot to link this when I first published this post)
  6. If you see something you don’t like, then just block the user. No need to rally people to cancel said user. Just block and move on.
  7. Use Tag and Post Filters. It’s your responsibility to curate what you see on this site, so add as much filters as you want.
  8. Spell out words. Do not say oomfs or moots. Say “just kidding” instead of “/jk”. Don’t censor triggering words like r@pe. For someone’s filters to work, the content being filtered has to be spelled right. By censoring your words, you’re putting people more at risk to seeing them. More about this on my Tumblr Posting Guide and Best Practices.
  9. Turn off Best Stuff First. We hate algorithms here. Everyone views their dashboard in reverse chronological order.
  10. Tumblr has post limits, but you rarely have to worry about them. I’m too lazy to grab links from the official docs for reference, so take this post limit screenshot (courtesy of XKit) instead. [Ignore the values under Remaining]
Blogs: 10; Follows: 200; Likes: 1,000; Photos: 250; Posts: 250; Video Seconds: 3,600; Videos: 20ALT

Edit: Okay, this is very important for Twitter refugees so I just had to include it:

When your post is reblogged by someone else, then you can no longer completely delete your post.

Unlike quote retweets, reblogs are forever. You may delete the original post, but you won’t be able to delete the reblogs of that post. They will continue to exist on other people’s blogs.

The best you can do to limit views on a post you want gone is to disable reblogs on said post before deleting it. That way, even if the reblogged version still exists, there’ll be no way to spread them further. Just make sure that you won’t regret it later.

Here’s an example of me doing exactly this on a post of mine that got over 10k notes.

A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF ALL THE BUTTONS ON TUMBLR MOBILE FOR MY TWITTER REFUGES :)

i know a lot of fellow former twitter users are a bit confused by this app, so here’s some hopefully helpful tips!

image

this is what you should see at the bottom of the screen when making a new post

the first button (Aa) lets you change the size of your font into a bigger heading or subheading, or even make your text a cursive or times new roman type font

  1. it also lets you make these bulleted lists! to use it, just tap multiple times until you get the setting you want
image

tap this button to add links, then just type the site name in the box and hit return. for example: http://heresalink.com

image

these are where you can add gifs, pictures, and music! for pictures, just tap the icon and select what you want, then you can press and drag to move it around or drag to the trashcan to delete

gifs are very similar to twitter - type in what you want and scroll through the options

image

GIF by taylorsnationblog

music is also similar. type the song you want and tap on it. podcasts also work!

image

this button is for polls! tap and add your silly little answers. the duration can be a day or a week

do u miss twitter be honest

yeah a little

hell no

See Results
image

this button lets you make a “cut” in your posts which is basically a “read more” button. got a long post you don’t want cluttering up everyone’s dashes? click here!

image

lastly, this button lets you set content warnings! specifically this is for “mature content”, but when you click mature you can specify whether its due to drugs/alcohol, violence, or sexual content

this can be helpful to clue people in to potential triggers but PLEASE ALWAYS TAG YOUR SPECIFIC TRIGGERS ANYWAYS.

Other Helpful Tips

  • “highlight” your text by pressing and selecting like normal to unlock a bunch of cool formatting options including bold, strikethrough, and colors
  • hitting the three dots next to the post button lets you access a bunch of post settings like queuing posts, scheduling posts, saving drafts, making posts private (PLEASE NOTE: you cannot unprivate posts after, but you can share the link), and choosing who can reblog & who can pay to promote your content

CONGRATS you’re now ready to make better posts like a tumblr pro

i'm all for welcoming twitter and reddit refugees but you guys have got to leave your unsolicited argumentative dickheadery at the door. why are you reblogging fanart or people's original writing or people's goddamn personal posts like "ew this is gross" or "lmao cringe"? reblogging is not a quote tweet, it's not a comment we can downvote into oblivion, we can see this shit, it contributes nothing but pissing off you and everyone else. don't like something? block op and ignore it. we stopped throwing shit at each other in 2019; you should too.

This is how I feel about Joshua Trees. They and avocado trees produce fruit meant to be eaten and dispersed by giant ground sloths. Without them, the Joshua Trees' range has shrunk by 90%.

image
image

(my own photos)

Not only they, but the entire Mojave ecosystem is still struggling to adapt since the loss of ground sloth dung. their chief fertilizer.

Many, many trees and plants in the Americas have widely-spaced, extremely long thorns that do nothing to discourage deer eating their leaves, but would've penetrated the fur of ground sloths and mammoths. Likewise, if you've observed a tree that drops baseball or softball-sized fruit which lies on the ground and rots, like Osage Oranges, which were great for playing catch at my school, chances are they were ground sloth or mammoth chow.

You can read about various orphaned plants and trees missing their megafauna in this poignant post:
